Pet Tips for the Seasons
With summer on the way, many people are starting to think about how to protect their animals from fleas and ticks. While this is an important part of caring for your companion animals, many of these products contain chemicals that can harm your furry friend. The EPA only recently started to review these products for safety, and although many of them are on the market, they have yet to be tested. The most dangerous chemicals found in flea and tick products are called organophosphate insecticides (OP’s) and carbamates. A product contains an OP if the ingredient list contains chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, phosmet, naled, tetrachlorvinphos, diazinon, or malathion. A product contains a carbamate if it has carbaryl or propoxur in it.
To ensure that your animal is safe from the poisonous effects of these chemicals, always check with you veterinarian before using a flea or tick product. It is also imperative that you don’t use a product designed for cats on dogs, and vice versa. And be sure to NEVER use one of these products on very young, sickly, elderly, pregnant, or nursing animals.
