Every February, we appeal to you to support our Spay/Neuter Program. In the past, we have told the stories of countless cats and kittens who were born and cared for under dire circumstances. We have laid out the grim statistics surrounding the fate of dogs and cats in our country and the rapid rate at which they can reproduce. In the 1970’s, we took the lead in adopting out only sterilized cats. In the 1990’s, we took the innovative step of opening our own in-house clinic. More recently, we have highlighted our programs for low-income pet guardians and our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program for feral cats. But there is still so much work to do because despite the hard work of organizations like Tree House, more than five million companion animals are still being killed at animal shelters every year and more than half of them are cats.
There is so much to do! As you know, we are in the midst of planning a new high-volume, low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic at our new Bucktown Branch and we are rolling out our “Sex and the Kitty” campaign to educate pet guardians about the importance of Spay/Neuter and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). In 2007, we performed more spay/neuter surgeries than ever before (nearly 900) and we took the lead this year in presenting Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) workshops in the Chicago area in an effort to reduce the influx of homeless kittens and feral cats into shelters.
But even after decades of educating, campaigning and working to spay and neuter stray cats, the reality is that there are still millions of un-spayed and un-neutered companion animals in this country. Therefore, we all need to keep working toward our common goal of becoming a no-kill nation. With such an overwhelming problem to solve, we can’t afford to stop and reflect on it. So we will continue to provide as many low-cost spay/neuter surgeries as possible. We will continue to present TNR workshops every week across Chicagoland. We will continue to expand our Feral Friends Program and we will again offer 100 FREE Spay/Neuter packages as part of Spay/Neuter month in February. Click here for information.
But we need your help! Are you willing to do what it takes to make this a no-kill country? Please sign the pledge to do your part to educate everyone you know about the importance of spaying/neutering pets. Spread the word. Take action. Spay and neuter your pets, TNR a feral cat colony in your neighborhood, and encourage anyone you know to do the right thing.
Until there are no more homeless pets, we won’t stop our life-saving work and we can only do it with your support. Please donate to support our Spay/Neuter Program. Chicago’s sick, injured, abused and neglected strays will get a second chance at life with your support.
